On Sunday night, police caught the woman they’d been following, and in the process she went on to cause a police chase across Melbourne’s CBD.

Police say she fled in a black Toyota Prius that they later found abandoned on the side of a busy road.

The woman’s name has not been released.

It’s understood she had a large amount of cash in the car.

She was taken into custody at about 9.45pm.

“It’s very unusual for a woman to be in a car, it’s not a common sight for a police car to be out on a street, it is quite unusual,” Acting Commissioner Robyn Hartley said.

Police had spotted the Prius, which had a white roof and a silver roof spoiler, in the area of the intersection of Macquarie Street and Swanston Street.

They were following a man who had driven past the intersection.

A number of other cars were also involved in the chase, and officers were seen using lights and sirens.

The chase ended in a police stop at the intersection where the woman was arrested.

Officers have not said whether they found the stolen car, or whether they will be pursuing it. ABC/AAP
